Photography Blog

Welcome to John Gilchrist Photography Blogspot.

Some people are said to have an ''Eye'' for a photograph, I believe it’s more about practice, persistence and passion! Over the years, I really have stuck my nose into photography and have always kept myself firmly on the photography learning curve. I think I can safely say that it is something I will never leave! I prefer a more relaxed approach to photography. Photos are often taken at locations such as local parks or nearby locations in or around Edinburgh and Midlothian.

Ensuring that my subjects are comfortable and enjoying themselves is a vital part of each shoot. My passion is photography. To capture that shot that I want, so I can treasure it forever. To grab the spark in a special moment, an event or someone you love so you can hold it for a lifetime. The great thing about photography is that the subject can be open. I could get lost in creating a fantasy piece or photograph

Content is King

A great story is personal, I will do my best to keep you up to date and amused with fresh material. Look out for links, some images may open up or redirect to support or build on what’s there. To contact me, please drop me a line via the contact form.

  • .... what will you find here?

Good question, well to be truthful I do not know! Thought I would start by placing at least one image every couple of months in this area. It could be a favourite image from a recently taken compilation, even a little bit of something that simply takes my fancy, or maybe a not so new image from days gone by.

a unique collection of handpicked images

I will try to put in some up to date news mixed with various latest work and the odd opinion and view. It will be a “hodgepodge” of content so this does mean irregularity; do not expect continuity to flow, inconsistency is the key here. If nothing else, just skip the blurb and scroll through the images. The principal use of this blog is to focus on photographs rather than text; I will attempt to drop in a line or two to describe some background information about the photograph and some aspects of artistic expression. There is no doubt about it a photo blog helps conserve the memories. It’s nice to flick through my shared photographs and recollect a few key moments from time gone by. North Berwick

North Berwick

A few hours at the seaside in North Berwick on Scotland's East Coast

A lovely spot on Scotland’s east coast, we were down visiting for the day, it was nice to get out in the sunshine once again. Lots of activity out on the water, a lovely stretch of seafront, getting your shoes and socks off to walk in sand and cold shallow water is so refreshing. A clean sandy beach makes all the difference, the large skip of seaweed is a good sign that the local authorities have taken time out to care about the town’s appearance.

The rescue boat in the boat house was nice colourful shot.

Walls Have Eyes

walls have eyes

Wall Art Edinburgh, Do walls have ears? No! they have eyes

Someone is watching me,wall art in the city

Ever turned the corner whilst walking down the street and your gut feeling tells you that you have lost all privacy cos someone has their eye on you. Well this guy’s roaming eye seemed to follow me all the way down the road. So I just had to stop and stare and back. Wall art in Edinburgh can have a really dramatic impact, this Mural on Guthrie Street, Edinburgh.

A mixture of slow shutter (tripod) and hand held shots... ie it was blowing a gale, to capture the wind socks it had to be fast enough shutter speed hand help to try and freeze the motion not blur it. Quite a challenge in the dark!

Two Straps are Better Than One

Doing the Double

Just got my Black rapid the other day, tried it out for the first time, one thing for sure it certainly feels better on the old shoulders than the standard camera strap,  I just don’t know if I’ll have the confidence to wear as often as I would like to. I suppose a dark top / t-shirt would help it blend in and be less conspicuous.

HMFC - Heart of Midlothian

HMFC

Tynecastle - HMFC Football Stadium

Scottish Professional Football Club - Founded 1874

Hearts, Hearts, glorious Hearts, It's down at Tynecastle they bide, the talk of the toon are the boys in maroon and Auld Reekie supports them with pride. Their Tynecastle Stadium is based in Gorgie, their colours are maroon and white.

The Badge

The Heart Badge adorned on the Hearts Football Strip is based on the Heart of Midlothian mosaic on the Royal Mile. Tourists to Edinburgh will frequently observe people spitting on the Heart. Why would you spit in the Heart? Well, there are several assumptions associated with this Scottish Tradition ranging from the discontent against authority to the “it will bring you good luck” element and apparently if you are lovers it’s not in your best interest to stand in the centre and kiss.
